Bayern Munich 2-2 Arsenal | UEFA Champions League – League Phase, Matchday 3
A Draw at the Allianz Arena, and a Battle for Prestige
Arsenal strike first and hit back late, Bayern escape with a point from a fiery European night

The night of 21 October in Munich was no routine fixture on the Champions League calendar. It was a meeting of two schools, each trying to prove it belongs at Europe’s top table this season. The contest ended 2-2, a result that satisfies both sides on paper and leaves both with a lingering sense of what might have been.
First Half: Eze Opens, Davies Replies
Arsenal walked in with the composure of a side that knows how to find the net in big stadiums. On 25 minutes, Eberechi Eze turned that composure into the opening goal and silenced the Allianz Arena. The English forward showed again that he is the signing who gave Arteta what he was missing: a player who makes something out of nothing.
Bayern, though, are not easily beaten at home. Ten minutes later, on 35 minutes, Alphonso Davies restored parity, a goal bearing the signature of a full-back who becomes a winger when his side needs him. The teams went in level at the break, both aware that the second half would offer no mercy.
Second Half: Kane From the Spot, Rice Has the Last Word
On 61 minutes came the kind of moment Harry Kane lives for. He converted a penalty with the calm of a marksman who does not know nerves, putting Bayern ahead for the first time on the night. The familiar German script seemed complete: patience, pressure, then the knockout blow from the centre-forward.
But this Arsenal is not the fragile Arsenal of past seasons. On 82 minutes, Declan Rice, the team’s beating heart, stepped forward to level the score and pull his side back into the match at a decisive moment. The goal confirmed that the London club has finally learned not to collapse when it falls behind in hostile grounds.
Arsenal: They leave Munich with a point worth a victory in morale. They struck first, answered Bayern’s lead, and showed their European personality has matured. Yet the question will follow Arteta: why does a team of this quality struggle to close out big matches when it controls them?
Bayern Munich: They avoided defeat but not the questions. A side that concedes twice at home and surrenders a lead eight minutes from time must review its defensive solidity before the decisive turns of the competition.
The English subplot: In a striking twist, the decisive goals were shared between England captain Harry Kane and his international teammates Eze and Rice. An English night on German soil.
A draw that keeps both sides’ hopes intact in the league-phase race, but exposes a clear truth: the gap between the top and the chasing pack in Europe this season is measured in details, and whoever masters the art of closing out games will have the final say in May.
