A Draw That Reads Like a Confession: FCSB Wastes the Best of Itself Against Petrolul

Romanian Superliga | Round 9 | Arena Națională

On the same turf that once served as a coronation stage, FCSB looked on Monday night less like a former champion than like a side still searching for its identity. A 2-2 draw with Petrolul Ploiești cannot be read in the results column alone; it must be read for what it revealed  a team that has fifteen minutes of quality, and not ninety minutes of character.

Three Minutes Were Enough

The visitors did not wait to be handed anything. Three minutes had passed before a ball from Bran Flores reached N'Lundulu, who put it away and opened the scoring early at the Arena Națională. A goal built from a single act: one pass, one touch. No siege, no long spell of possession, no elaborate philosophy  only an opponent who permitted it, and a striker who did not hesitate.

This was no isolated accident in the Bucharest side's season. They entered the match eighth on eleven points, after a bruising run of one win, one draw and three defeats in their last five rounds, the most recent a loss to Dinamo. Petrolul, by contrast, arrived fourth on fifteen points, with four victories in their previous five outings. The table was not lying, and the opening three minutes merely said so out loud.

Fifteen Minutes That Looked Like the Old Team

Then, as happens to big clubs when they are provoked, FCSB woke up. A penalty followed, after Țuțu brought down Garita inside the area; the referee needed close to four minutes of video review before Ofri Arad converted in the fourteenth minute. Three minutes later Korenica struck the crossbar, and then came the deserved reward: Korenica's goal in the twenty-fourth minute turned the scoreline in the hosts' favour.

Twenty-five minutes of direct, fearless football  the football this club played when it dictated the rhythm of the league. And there lies the small tragedy of the evening: the team knows how to play, and then chooses not to.

The Second Half: Not a Collapse, a Fading

FCSB did not collapse after the interval; it simply went out. Baciu's players no longer carried the same edge, and the match turned into a passive wait for the final whistle. In football, waiting is a tax that always falls due: the equaliser arrived in the sixty-sixth minute through Malula  the same player whose dangerous strike Târnovanu had been forced to keep out before half-time.

A warning was issued, and it was not read. That is the essence of the night: a known threat, a named source, and a defence that learned nothing in forty-five minutes.

Reading the Table

Dinamo lead on twenty points, Rapid follow on eighteen, while Universitatea Craiova climbed to third on seventeen after a first away win. This draw lifts Petrolul to sixteen points and preserves their place among the front-runners; FCSB reach twelve  a figure unworthy of their history, and one that affords them no luxury of delay.

The Verdict

A point for Petrolul is a gain earned on the ground of one of the league's heavyweights. A point for FCSB is a defeat deferred. The difference between the two sides on Monday night lay neither in names nor in budgets, but in the capacity to repeat oneself: Petrolul played their full game, FCSB played theirs for twenty-five minutes.

And in a league this tight, a team that owns only a quarter of an hour owns no title.
