Al Ahly of Egypt maintained their position at the top of Group B in the CAF Champions League after being held to a 1–1 draw by hosts Young Africans of Tanzania on Saturday, in the fourth round of the group stage.
Al Ahly moved to eight points, remaining top of the standings and holding a three-point lead over Young Africans, who sit second.
Another Group B fixture later on Saturday sees AS FAR Rabat (third with two points) face JS Kabylie of Algeria, who are fourth with the same tally.
Young Africans took the lead in the first minute of first-half stoppage time through Ibrahim Hamad, before Aliou Dieng equalised for Al Ahly in the 60th minute.
Al Ahly will face JS Kabylie away in the fifth round on February 7, while AS FAR Rabat host Young Africans on the same day.
The match began with an early attempt from Al Ahly in the fourth minute, as Taher Mohamed Taher fired a shot that went wide. Young Africans then tried to apply pressure on Al Ahly’s defence, but without posing any real threat.
In the 11th minute, Young Africans created a dangerous opportunity with a powerful shot that was superbly saved by Al Ahly goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir, before the rebound was fired over the bar.
Al Ahly’s attacking efforts relied mainly on crosses from Mohamed Hany and forward runs by Mahmoud Trézéguet, though neither produced a direct threat on goal.
Al Ahly came close to scoring in the 25th minute when Yasser Ibrahim headed over the crossbar. Shobeir was called into action again three minutes later, producing another excellent save in a one-on-one situation after a Young Africans player dribbled past Yasser Ibrahim.
Young Africans launched two further attacks on Al Ahly’s goal, the first ending wide and the second dealt with comfortably by Shobeir.
Three minutes before half-time, Al Ahly missed a golden chance when Marwan Osman slipped a pass in behind the Young Africans defence to Ahmed Sayed “Zizo”, who hesitated in a promising position, allowing the Tanzanian defence to recover and clear the danger.
In stoppage time of the first half, Young Africans snatched a surprise opener following a low cross into the penalty area and a costly defensive error by Al Ahly. Aliou Dieng failed to intercept the ball, which fell to Ibrahim Hamad, who finished easily into the net.
At the start of the second half, Young Africans pushed for a second goal in an attempt to completely disrupt Al Ahly’s plans, but the Egyptian side’s defence held firm.
Young Africans goalkeeper Gigi Diarra denied Trézéguet with a save in the 55th minute, marking Al Ahly’s first real attempt of the second half.
Al Ahly eventually found the equaliser in the 60th minute through midfielder Aliou Dieng. Zizo delivered a cross into the box, Trézéguet laid it off, and Dieng fired the ball into the net.
Following the equaliser, Al Ahly pressed hard in search of a second goal, while Young Africans dropped deeper, wary of conceding again—particularly as fatigue became evident among their players in the final 15 minutes.
As time went on, tiredness also crept into Al Ahly’s performance, with attacking efforts diminishing in the closing stages. Play became largely confined to midfield, with neither side creating clear-cut chances. Al Ahly failed to test Diarra, while Shobeir was not seriously threatened at the other end.
No further developments occurred before the referee blew the final whistle, confirming a 1–1 draw between Young Africans and Al Ahly.
