Manchester City moved back within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal as Antoine Semenyo's goal clinched a 1-0 win over Leeds United at Elland Road.
Erling Haaland was unable to feature in the city of his birth after suffering an injury in training, and though Pep Guardiola's side initially struggled without the Norwegian, they battled to a fourth straight league victory.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Brenden Aaronson missed glorious opportunities during the early stages, but City survived that pressure and gradually took control.
Their winner arrived in the second minute of first-half stoppage time, with Semenyo tucking past Karl Darlow after incisive play from Rayan Cherki and Rayan Ait-Nouri.
Jaka Bijol missed Leeds' best chance to equalise, and the hosts' head coach Daniel Farke was shown a red card after he confronted the officials at full-time. His team stay six points clear of the relegation zone in 15th, while City will be interested viewers when Arsenal host Chelsea on Sunday.
How the match unfolded
Calvert-Lewin had a chance to ignite an already boisterous atmosphere in the third minute, but he turned Aaronson's cross wide with the goal at his mercy.
Leeds continued to threaten as Calvert-Lewin fired across goal on the turn, while Marc Guehi did enough to put Aaronson off when he looked destined to steer home.
Though Aaronson spurned another clear opening on the break, a sustained spell of possession helped City take the sting out of the game, and they hit the front when Semenyo met Ait-Nouri's cross on the slide, with only seconds remaining until half-time.
Omar Marmoush volleyed high and wide of the near post early in the second half, while Guehi saw a header sensationally clawed off the line by Darlow.
Leeds caused a few nerves late on, but their best chance saw Bijol head wide and tempers boiled over at full-time, with Farke seeing red after a heated approach to referee Peter Bankes.
