Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni spoke about the team’s 2-1 loss vs. Colombia.

The Argentina national team lost 2-1 vs. Colombia in the South American World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday in what was their third loss in five years. Lionel Scaloni spoke to the media after the loss, including about the controversial VAR decision from the referee. Here is what he

“If I speak, they’ll say we don’t know how to lose. We congratulate Colombia. I think we played a good game, according to the circumstances. We gave our best at all times and we could have even won it.

“We don’t like to lose. After the penalty, we practically didn’t play. That’s what bothered me, that’s what I saw.

“Colombia has great players and a well-oiled system. It is extremely complex to play against them here. I think we had the chances to win it but we couldn’t do it.

“We always try to move behind the ball and be effective in the final meters, which we couldn’t do today. We have to correct the things we need to improve”.

Argentina lost 2-1 against Colombia, only their third loss in the last five years.

A first half which didn’t see Argentina create many chances, they did create the first of the match. Julian Alvarez pressed the goalkeeper and stole the ball but his effort from a difficult angle went just wide.

Colombia did take the 1-0 lead off a cross. They were awarded a corner kick which they played short and crossed it into the penalty area and Yerson Mosquera would score off a header.

Nahuel Molina would replace Gonzalo Montiel at half time and the second half saw Argentina scoring. A give away in midfield and Nicolás González got the ball and outran his marker, scoring to draw Argentina level.

At 1-1, Otamendi tackled inside the penalty area and did not appear to make contact with the Colombian player. The play went on and Argentina were fouled but the referee went to VAR and awarded a penalty.

James Rodríguez would score the penalty to give Colombia the 2-1 lead.

Lionel Scaloni would bring on Alexis Mac Allister, Marcos Acuña, Gio Lo Celso and Paulo Dybala for Leandro Paredes, Lisandro Martínez, Rodrigo De Paul and Enzo Fernández.

The match would end in a 2-1 win for Colombia. Argentina play two more World Cup qualifying matches next month.
