Arsenal began the defence of their Premier League title in commanding fashion, brushing aside newly-promoted Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Friday evening. The occasion carried extra significance: it was the Gunners' first competitive outing since being crowned champions just 89 days earlier, and Coventry's first top-flight match in 25 years.

Despite pitting the reigning champions against a side fresh off promotion from the Championship, the contest produced no surprises.
