Aston Villa ended their 30-year trophy drought with a dominant 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg in the 2026 UEFA Europa League final in Istanbul on Wednesday night.
Match Report
Villa controlled proceedings from the start and took the lead in the 41st minute through a spectacular volley from Youri Tielemans, who timed his run perfectly to slam home a pinpoint cross from Morgan Rogers following a clever short corner routine. It was only Tielemans' second goal of the season.
Just before halftime, Emiliano Buendía doubled the lead with a sublime curling strike from the edge of the area that nestled into the far corner, leaving Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu with no chance.
The result was put beyond doubt in the 58th minute when Morgan Rogers slid in to convert Buendía's cross, sealing a comprehensive victory for Unai Emery's side.
Significance
The victory marks Aston Villa's first major trophy since the 1996 League Cup and their first European silverware in 44 years, following their famous 1982 European Cup triumph over Bayern Munich. It was also manager Unai Emery's record fifth Europa League title, adding to his previous successes with Sevilla (2014, 2015, 2016) and Villarreal (2021).
Villa wore white shirts for the final — a nod to their 1982 European Cup victory in Rotterdam — with nine members of that legendary 1982 squad, including Peter Withe and Dennis Mortimer, watching from the stands at Besiktas Park. The win capped a remarkable turnaround for a team that started the season with six winless games but qualified for next season's Champions League just last week.
