Brazil left Townsville with a draw they can't really claim. A young player's header in the dying seconds saved them from defeat, not any superiority on the pitch. This was the Seleção's first match since their painful round-of-16 exit to Norway at the World Cup, and fans were waiting to see a team rebuilding itself. Instead they saw a side still searching for an identity, chasing the result until the 95th minute.
A bold Australian start
The Socceroos didn't play like polite hosts. They pressed high from the start, and Connor Metcalfe and Nestory Irankunda pushed forward without hesitation. In the seventh minute Irankunda tried a long-range shot that goalkeeper Hugo Souza saved. It was an early sign that the young winger would be the story of the evening.
Brazilian possession without a cutting edge
Brazil slowly took control of the ball, and Estêvão, Vinícius Júnior and Raphinha tried from every angle. But the possession never turned into goals. Bruno Guimarães fired over the bar, and Raphinha's effort went just wide. In first-half stoppage time Estêvão put the ball into the bottom-left corner, but VAR ruled the goal out for a foul by Bruno Guimarães on Harry Souttar in the build-up. The disallowed goal seemed to sum up Brazil's state since the World Cup.
Irankunda's strike
In the 68th minute Irankunda stood over a free-kick and curled it over the wall into the top-left corner, leaving Hugo Souza with no chance. It was more than a beautiful goal. It announced a new Australian generation that isn't intimidated by big names, and it put Australia minutes away from only their second win ever against the five-time world champions.
Resistance, then heartbreak at the death
Australia defended their lead with everything they had. Souttar threw himself in front of a Douglas Luiz shot, and goalkeeper Patrick Beach made several important saves. But in the 95th minute Raphinha delivered a precise corner and Rayan rose to power it home with his head. Beach got a hand to it and pushed it onto the crossbar, but it bounced down off the underside and over the line. The Australian players fell to the ground, and Carlo Ancelotti breathed a sigh of relief.
Reading the result
The draw stops Brazil from losing back-to-back matches for the first time since 2023, but it answers none of the questions raised after the World Cup. Long spells of possession with no bite, a midfield that circulates the ball without breaking lines, and a team that needed a last-gasp corner to avoid defeat against a side ranked well below them. Raphinha was named man of the match for creating the goal, but the real prize in Townsville belonged to Irankunda.
Australia lost the win but gained something more important: the belief that they can compete with the elite. Friendly matches rarely give a team that kind of confidence.
