Bayern Munich Crowned German Super Cup Champions at Dortmund's Expense
Dortmund — By Dr. Talal Othman
Bayern Munich opened their new season in the best possible fashion on Saturday evening, defeating hosts Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at Signal Iduna Park in the match that brought together the Bundesliga champions and runners-up for the 2026 German Super Cup (Franz Beckenbauer Supercup) title.
Match Report
Bayern imposed their control over the first half from the opening minutes, translating that dominance into an opening goal through young defender Nathaniel Brown in the 28th minute, after he exploited space outside the penalty area and fired the ball into the net.
Bayern gave their hosts no respite, doubling their lead through new French full-back Michael Olise right before the end of the first half, in the 45+1st minute, sending the two sides into the dressing rooms with Bayern ahead by two clear goals.
The first half also saw a dangerous chance for Dortmund through Luis Diaz, who found himself clean through inside the six-yard box, but Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel produced a brilliant save to deny him in the 40th minute — described as the hosts' clearest chance of the match.
In the second half, Dortmund pushed to close the gap and intensified their attacking pressure, and their persistence was rewarded with a goal that narrowed the deficit through Portuguese forward Fábio Silva in the 75th minute. However, time ran out before they could find an equalizer, and the match ended 2-1 in Bayern's favor, crowning them champions.
Tournament Context and Historical Numbers
The German Super Cup is traditionally contested between the Bundesliga champions and runners-up from the previous season. Bayern Munich entered the match as champions of the 2025-26 Bundesliga season, while Dortmund represented the runners-up. With this victory, Bayern extend their tally to 12 titles in the competition, maintaining their historic lead in the tournament's all-time record, while Dortmund's tally remains at 6 titles, the last of which came in the 2019 edition — which was also their most recent win on home soil in this competition specifically.
The win also confirmed Bayern's recent dominance over their rivals, having already won both league meetings between the two sides last season by an aggregate score of 5-3.
Both sides took to the field under relatively new managers: Vincent Kompany leads Bayern Munich, while Niko Kovač oversees Dortmund's coaching after taking over the role from Nuri Sahin. Bayern were without Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl, in addition to Jamal Musiala, who is still recovering from a neurological health issue, while Dortmund were missing the services of Emre Can and Nico Schlotterbeck due to injury.
