Benjamin Sesko scored from the bench yet again as Manchester United edged out Everton 1-0 at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

A Premier League contest of few clear chances was settled in the 71st minute by a stunning counter-attacking strike.

Sesko, as he was against Fulham and West Ham United in recent weeks, proved to be United's super-sub as he capped off a slick break after great play from fellow forwards Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

The goal came against the run of play, with Everton having the better of the second half, but the closest they came to beating goalkeeper Senne Lammens was when the Belgian tipped over from a Michael Keane piledriver.

Man Utd remain unbeaten in their second stint under head coach Michael Carrick and move above Chelsea into fourth spot, while Everton remain in ninth place.

How the match unfolded

Thierno Barry forced a nervy clearance from Lammens within seconds of the start, though Man Utd created the first chance when Amad's shot squirmed under 'keeper Jordan Pickford, who had James Tarkowski behind him to hook it off the line.

Two robust defences offered few sightings of goal until, around the half-hour mark, Diogo Dalot’s brilliant strike whistled just wide of the right-hand post, before James Garner tested Lammens with a long-range free-kick soon after.

Mbeumo pounced on a failed clearance from Tarkowski early in the second half, but he could only blaze over from a tight angle under pressure from Pickford.

Midfielders Idrissa Gueye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall saw shots blocked as Everton upped the pressure, though the hosts got lucky when Cunha slipped while breaking clear.

But there was no second let-off for the Toffees when a sublime Cunha crossfield pass set Mbeumo free. The Cameroonian squared up Keane and laid it off invitingly for Sekso, who calmly drilled home.

Blistering shots from Keane and substitute Tyrique George drew fine saves out of Lammens, but despite controlling possession, Everton lacked the cutting edge to go any closer.
