Freiburg overturned a one-goal deficit to secure an exciting 2–1 victory over their visitors Hamburg on Saturday, in Matchday 16 of the German Bundesliga.
In other fixtures, Heidenheim drew 2–2 at home with Cologne, while Union Berlin were held to a 2–2 draw by Mainz.
In the opening match, Hamburg took the lead through Luka Vuskovic in the 48th minute. However, just five minutes later, Vincenzo Grifo equalised for Freiburg from the penalty spot, a goal that coincided with the dismissal of Hamburg player Daniel Elfadli. Freiburg then completed the comeback seven minutes from time, with Igor Matanović scoring the winning goal for the hosts.
The victory lifted Freiburg to eighth place with 23 points, while Hamburg remain 13th with 16 points.
At the Voith-Arena, Heidenheim opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Marvin Pieringer, but Cologne responded quickly as Eric Martel equalised three minutes later. Julian Niehues restored Heidenheim’s lead in the 26th minute, before Said El Mala brought Cologne level once again in the 48th minute.
The draw leaves Heidenheim in 17th place with 12 points, while Cologne sit 10th with 17 points.
In the third match, Mainz squandered a two-goal advantage away to Union Berlin and had to settle for a 2–2 draw.
Mainz went ahead with goals from Nadiem Amiri in the 30th minute and Benedict Hollerbach in the 69th, but Union Berlin mounted a late comeback. Jeong Woo-yeong pulled one back in the 77th minute, before Marin Ljubičić struck the equaliser in the 86th minute.
Union Berlin moved up to ninth place with 22 points, while Mainz remain bottom of the table with just nine points.
