Lazio handed a gift to Inter Milan, the leaders of the Italian Serie A, by defeating their hosts Napoli 2-0 on Saturday in the 33rd matchday of the competition.
Napoli's tally froze at 66 points in second place, 12 points behind leaders Inter Milan, who won 3-0 against Cagliari in the same round.
The loss all but ended Napoli's hopes of defending the Italian league title they won last season, and Inter Milan can now officially clinch the title if Napoli loses or draws against Cremonese in the next round while Inter beats Torino in the same fixture.
On the other side, Lazio boosted their tally to 47 points in ninth place, now 10 points behind their city rivals Roma in sixth—the last spot qualifying for next season's European competitions.
Lazio took the lead in the 6th minute through Matteo Cancellieri, with teammate Toma Basic adding the second goal in the 57th minute.
