In football, some goals are scored, and some are wrenched from the jaws of time itself. What Adrián Niño did on Friday night at La Rosaleda belongs to the second kind: a goal in the third minute of stoppage time that turned a defeat being written line by line into a draw that tasted like victory, keeping Málaga on their feet in their season of return to the top flight.

Zaragoza: The Early Blow
Espanyol needed no more than thirteen minutes to have their first say. Bryan Zaragoza, a son of Málaga returning to his city in the opponents’ shirt, found the net early, an irony cruel enough to unsettle both the stands and the home side. The winger joined the Catalan club in the summer to bring star quality, and here he proved that speed and daring in the final third remain his primary currency.
The early goal gave Espanyol exactly what they like: a lead to defend and spaces to exploit on the transition. Málaga, meanwhile, faced the hardest question in modern football: how do you dismantle a well-organised block that has all the time in the world to wait for you?
Espanyol Manage, Málaga Knock on the Door
The match held that rhythm for a long time: Espanyol narrowing the margins, closing the centre and slowing play whenever they could. Málaga tried, repeated, and ran into the same wall. The Andalusians’ problem was not desire but tools; possession without penetration is merely an exercise in patience, and patience in football is not always rewarded.
With every passing minute, the three points looked closer to the Catalan kit bag, and Espanyol drew nearer to a “clean” exit from a difficult ground.
“El Niño” and the Man of the Final Minutes
Then came the 93rd minute. At the very moment when fans usually start gathering their belongings, Adrián Niño was in the right place to put the ball in the net and set La Rosaleda alight.
What stands out is that this is not the first time. The young striker followed a similar script at Balaídos, equalising for Málaga against Celta Vigo from a corner in the 84th minute. We are looking at a player with that rare gift that cannot be coached: being decisive when the pressure is at its peak. A product of Atlético Madrid’s academy, Niño scored 19 goals in two seasons with the club’s B team in Primera Federación before joining Málaga permanently in summer 2025 on a contract running until 2029.
Analytical Reading
Málaga: A precious point that should not mask the flaws. The side that returned to the top flight via the playoffs after getting past Las Palmas and Almería is still searching for its identity in LaLiga. The character is there and the spirit is beyond question, but creating chances against organised defences remains the central dilemma. A team aiming for survival cannot hang its fate every week on a flash of inspiration in stoppage time.
Espanyol: This is two points dropped more than one point gained. The Catalan side played the match as they planned it and held its keys, but paid the price for an overly defensive philosophy after taking the lead. When you choose to wait, you hand your opponent the last chance, and in football the last chance can be enough.
A draw with two faces: a night of rescue for Málaga, and a costly lesson for Espanyol. Between Zaragoza, who came home only to wound it, and Niño, who keeps writing his name in the minutes few dare to claim, La Rosaleda served up a match modest in tempo but loud in its message: in LaLiga, nothing is over until the referee’s final whistle.
