Manchester City Women clinch the Women’s Super League title after Arsenal draw with Brighton
Manchester City have won the FA Women’s Super League title for the first time in ten years after Arsenal, their nearest challengers, were held to a 1–1 draw away to Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday.
City now sit top of the table with 52 points from 21 of their 22 matches, while Arsenal needed to win all four of their remaining games to keep their title hopes alive, but their draw with Brighton ended those hopes.
City head coach Andrée Jeglertz said in a club statement that the players “faced every challenge bravely” and that it had been a pleasure to coach them this season. He added that the team stayed united through good moments and bad, and always found a way to win — “something all great champions do.”
Arsenal, who had already suffered a setback after losing in the Women’s Champions League semi-finals to Lyon, fell behind when Fuka Tsunoda scored late in the first half. Midfielder Frida Maanum equalized in the 60th minute, but despite late pressure, Arsenal could not find a winning goal.
Arsenal manager Renée Slegers congratulated Manchester City, saying they were now league champions, and described the day as disappointing. She also praised Brighton for being a difficult opponent and for playing well, but said Arsenal must look at themselves and feel very disappointed.
