Racing Santander: —
Real Madrid: Mbappé (pen) 11, Bellingham 21, Diomande 36
Some matches take 90 minutes to resolve. Others are over before the home crowd has properly settled. In Santander, Real Madrid needed barely half an hour to turn the promoted side’s big night into a brisk lesson in the gap between ambition and class.
Racing came into it carried by the buzz of top-flight football and one of Spain’s more atmospheric grounds. Enthusiasm, though, rarely survives a side that knows how to kill a game early. Eleven minutes in, Madrid were awarded a penalty and Kylian Mbappé dispatched it with his customary composure. The door was open, and it never closed again.
Ten minutes later it was Jude Bellingham’s turn. Drifting between the lines as if watching the game from the stand, the Englishman made it 2-0 on 21 minutes, and Racing already looked like a side chasing a shadow two steps ahead of them.
The final flourish belonged to Yan Diomande. The club’s record signing, bought from RB Leipzig in the summer, struck the third on 36 minutes, further evidence that José Mourinho did not buy a project for tomorrow but a finished piece for today. Three goals, three different scorers, one message: Madrid’s attack no longer leans on a single man.
The second half passed largely as a formality. Madrid managed the scoreline like a closed file, and Racing lacked the tools to convert pride into goals. The numbers did not change, and nobody needed them to.
For the hosts, this is less an embarrassment than a reminder of the distance between a newly promoted side and a giant with time, money and memory on its side. Racing’s real battles will be fought elsewhere, against the clubs around them at the bottom.
For Mourinho, an away clean sheet sealed by an early three-goal burst is exactly what a title-chasing side requires: efficiency without fuss, a verdict without delay.
Verdict: Real Madrid did not play a full match in Santander. They played 36 minutes, and that was enough. For their rivals in the title race, that may be the most ominous thing of all.
