NBA: LeBron James Shines in Philadelphia Debut

The King opens his final chapter with ten points in a single half, but the Nets spoil the party in Brooklyn

At 41, and on the threshold of his 24th season in the NBA, LeBron James stood before tip-off and tossed chalk into the air, as he has done thousands of times before. This time, though, the jersey was different. The Philadelphia 76ers, the fifth stop in the career of a man who has made headlines wherever he has gone, opened their era with “The King” with a 114-108 preseason loss to the Brooklyn Nets. Thursday night, however, was less about the result than about the picture.

One half was enough to read the message

James played just 18 minutes, all in the first half, finishing with 10 points, four rebounds, five assists and a steal. The numbers themselves are modest, but the details reveal a mind that refuses to age: one field-goal attempt, made; eight free throws from eight attempts; and all five assists delivered in the first quarter. LeBron did not come to score. He came to orchestrate, and his chemistry with Tyrese Maxey already seems ahead of schedule.

Philadelphia closed the first half leading 58-56, after a first quarter tied at 33-33 and a second quarter that tilted their way 25-23. Up to that point, the picture suggested a new team that knew where it was going.

The third quarter: when the conductor was gone

With James out of the equation, the cracks showed. The Nets crushed their opponents 37-23 in the third quarter, turning a deficit into a 12-point lead and effectively settling the game. Philadelphia tried to respond with a fourth quarter it won 27-21, but that was only enough to trim the margin to six.

Jaylen Brown, newly arrived from the Boston Celtics, led all scorers with 18 points, while Randle paced the Nets with 14. Philadelphia’s starting five was completed by Joel Embiid, VJ Edgecombe and Maxey, in the first collective outing of a lineup built around a single ambition: a title that has eluded the franchise for 43 years, since Julius Erving lifted the trophy in 1983.

Nurse: positives first

Head coach Nick Nurse did not hide his satisfaction with the early signs, pointing to good cuts behind the defense and sharp passing from the opening minutes. He acknowledged stretches of turnovers and disjointed play, but reminded everyone that this is the preseason and the first time this lineup has played together, and that the task now is to build on the positives and identify where to improve.

The noise arrives before the ball

LeBron never arrives in a city alone; he arrives with a storm. Days earlier, he took to Instagram to refute a broadcaster’s claim that he had scolded Embiid for being late to practice, writing that his teammate had never been late and telling people to stop lying. At the team’s media day, James had predicted that the noise around Philadelphia would multiply several times over “now that I’m here.” The prophecy, it seems, came true before the season even began.

James joined Philadelphia on a two-year, $8 million deal after eight seasons and one title in Los Angeles, chasing a potential fifth ring to add to his two in Miami, one in Cleveland and one with the Lakers. In a twist, the Lakers themselves celebrated Thursday night with a 114-110 win over the Sacramento Kings, their first preseason night without the King since 2018.

What’s next?

The 76ers have two preseason games left, both against the Boston Celtics, before the regular-season opener on October 20 against the defending champion New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. There, there will be no preseason and no excuses.
