William Osula scored a sensational 90th-minute winner as 10-man Newcastle United beat Manchester United 2-1 to hand Michael Carrick his first defeat.
Carrick's side looked to be favourites following a chaotic period of first-half stoppage-time at St James’ Park, which saw Anthony Gordon and Casemiro score at either end after the hosts had Jacob Ramsey sent off for two bookable offences, the second of which was for simulation.
However, Man Utd failed to make their numerical advantage count throughout the second half, with Aaron Ramsdale making fine saves to deny Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee.
Within two minutes of Ramsdale thwarting Zirkzee, substitute Osula raced forward on the counter-attack and beat Senne Lammens with a wonderful finish from near the corner of the area.
While Man Utd remain third on 51 points, above Aston Villa on goal difference and three points ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool, Newcastle are up to 12th with 39 points, nine points off the top six.
How the match unfolded
Newcastle nearly went ahead in bizarre fashion in the fourth minute as Kieran Trippier's floated cross struck the post, and that was the closest either team came to a goal until a chaotic end to the half.
Bryan Mbeumo blazed over a gaping goal, and that miss preceded a dramatic stint of stoppage time, which started with Ramsey receiving a second booking after he prodded the ball past Lammens and went down.
Newcastle responded to that setback brilliantly, with Gordon keeping his cool from the spot in the sixth minute of added time after being clattered into by Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes atoned by curling a free-kick into the area for Casemiro to nod home three minutes later, though Man Utd struggled to maintain their momentum.
They finally showed more attacking endeavour in the latter stages, with Ramsdale blocking Yoro's header and acrobatically denying Zirkzee, before Osula's wondergoal.
Having been released down the right by Tripper, Osula jinked past Tyrell Malacia and gave Lammens no chance, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.
