West Ham United are on the brink of relegation from the Premier League after they fell to a 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park. Newcastle raced into a 2-0 lead within 19 minutes, with Nick Woltemade ending his 17-match Premier League goal drought before a wonderful move was finished by William Osula. West Ham's awful start prompted Nuno Espirito Santo to change formation and introduce Valentin Castellanos after just 26 minutes, and that tactical switch made the visitors more competitive. Osula's second goal extended Newcastle's advantage in the 65th minute, though, and a comeback proved beyond West Ham even after Castellanos's stunning strike cut the deficit. West Ham will be relegated on Tuesday if Tottenham Hotspur win at Chelsea, while a draw at Stamford Bridge would also surely seal the Hammers' fate this season, given Spurs are 13 goals better off on goal difference. Eleventh-placed Newcastle could still finish as high as eighth, but only if several other results go their way in the final week of the season.
