Europe at the doorstep: Nottingham Forest edge Aston Villa in Europa League semi‑final thriller

New Zealander Chris Wood led Nottingham Forest to a narrow 1–0 win over local rivals Aston Villa on Thursday in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League semi‑final, firing his side one step closer to their first European final since 1980.

Wood’s decisive penalty

Wood clinched the match with the only goal from the penalty spot in the 71st minute, taking his tally to five goals in a season plagued by injuries.
The strike brought Forest within touching distance of a first European final since their golden era under Brian Clough, when they lifted the European Cup in 1979 and 1980.

Forest’s stunning turnaround

Manager Vítor Pereira’s Forest are riding a nine‑match winning streak across all competitions, lifting them five points clear of the relegation zone in the English Premier League while simultaneously pushing them toward a continental final.

The second leg will be played just 50 miles away at Villa Park on 7 May, before the winner is set to face the victor between Braga of Portugal and Freiburg of Germany in the final on 20 May in Istanbul.
Braga currently lead Freiburg 2–1 after the first leg in Portugal.

A season of drama and dreams

Qualifying for Istanbul would cap a roller‑coaster campaign for Forest: they have cycled through four managers, fought a fierce battle against relegation, and are now within one tie of their first major European showcase since their 1990s heyday.

Forest are back in European competition for the first time since 1995–1996, hunting for their first major trophy since lifting the League Cup in 1990, and their first final appearance since losing to Manchester United in the 1992 League Cup decider.

Unai Emery’s Forest challenge

Aston Villa’s manager Unai Emery is renowned as one of the premier specialists of the Europa League, having won the title three times with Sevilla and once with Villarreal, plus finishing as runner‑up with Arsenal.
Yet under Emery, Villa have fallen short each time they reached the semi‑finals: knocked out by Olympiacos in the 2024 Conference League semi‑finals, and by Crystal Palace in the 2025 FA Cup semi‑finals.

Parallel Braga–Freiburg clash

In the evening’s second match in the Portuguese capital, home side Braga struck early through Turkish forward Demir Teknaz in the 8th minute, then doubled their lead via an own goal by Uruguayan Rodrigo Martínez in stoppage time of the first half.
Freiburg replied with a 16th‑minute strike from Italian winger Vincenzo Grifo, leaving the aggregate scoreline delicately poised before the second‑leg showdown.
