Paris finish the job in 17 minutes and turn La Cerámica into a classroom

Four goals inside eight minutes left Villarreal shell-shocked before they had touched the ball in anger. Fabián Ruiz was immaculate as the holders made it four from four and pulled clear at the top.

Some defeats need a tactics board to explain them. This one needed only a stopwatch. Between the ninth and 17th minutes at the Estadio de la Cerámica, Villarreal were stripped of any pretence of competing, and what had been billed as a demanding night in Spain became a private exhibition for Luis Enrique’s side.

João Neves started it, pouncing from six yards after Willian Pacho had deflected a corner into his path. Désiré Doué doubled the lead three minutes later, and barely a minute after that Senny Mayulu exploited a muddle in the home defence to make it three. On 17 minutes Maghnes Akliouche laid on his second assist of the evening, finding Fabián Ruiz, whose low drive skidded past Péter Gulácsi. Four goals in eight minutes: less a collapse than a methodical dismantling of a side that never got the chance to breathe.

What was most alarming for Villarreal was not the goals themselves but how they arrived. PSG’s press strangled the build-up at source, Akliouche, Mayulu and Doué rotated relentlessly, and the midfield three dictated tempo like musicians who know the score by heart. On paper, Villarreal’s 4-4-2 looked balanced; on the grass it became two lines drifting apart, with Parisians strolling through the gap at will.

Anyone expecting the visitors to ease off after the break was corrected five minutes into the second half. Vitinha slid a precise ball into the area, Ruiz shook off Renato Veiga and finished on 50 minutes for his second. Sergi Cardona’s effort wide moments earlier was about as close as Villarreal came all night, which says everything: the hosts managed two shots on target in 90 minutes; PSG had 12.

Ruiz, a World Cup winner with Spain in the summer, produced one of his finest performances in a Paris shirt: 95 completed passes from 104, eight accurate long balls from nine, two goals and near-total command of the rhythm. Long regarded as the hidden cog in Luis Enrique’s machine, he stepped fully into the light.

With 12 minutes left the substitute David Boly swept in a sixth from Neves’s pass, a reminder that PSG’s depth is as dangerous as their headline names.

The win makes it four victories from four for the holders, who now sit three points clear in the league phase. Villarreal leave with a question that runs deeper than the scoreline: how does a club with their European pedigree lose the psychological battle before the contest has properly begun? At La Cerámica the gap was not just one of quality but of conviction. Paris came to kill the game; Villarreal came hoping to survive it. The result was six goals of hard truth.
