Algerian side USM Alger were crowned CAF Confederation Cup champions for the second time in their history after defeating Egypt’s Zamalek 8–7 on penalties in the final.
The shootout followed a 1–0 win for Zamalek in the second leg, matching USM Alger’s 1–0 victory in the first leg last week, leaving the aggregate score tied.
Zamalek’s only goal in regular time came early, with Palestinian star Odai Dabbagh scoring in the 5th minute.
However, the penalty shootout ultimately favored USM Alger, who had previously won the title in 2023.
This marks USM Alger’s second trophy of the season, having also won the Algerian Cup last month— their 10th title—after defeating CR Belouizdad in the final.
USM Alger will now face the winner of the CAF Champions League in the African Super Cup. The Champions League final is being contested between Morocco’s AS FAR and South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, with the first leg taking place in Pretoria and the return leg scheduled for May 24 in Rabat.
Zamalek had hoped to secure their third Confederation Cup title, having previously won the competition in 2019 and 2024, and to gain momentum ahead of their final Egyptian Premier League match against Ceramica Cleopatra, where they need just one point to clinch their 15th league title.
