Portugal defeated Nigeria 2–1 in a friendly match as part of their final preparations for the World Cup. The European Nations League champions secured the win before traveling to the United States to participate in the FIFA World Cup, which kicks off on Thursday evening and continues for more than a month, co‑hosted by Mexico and Canada.

Pedro Neto, the Chelsea winger, opened the scoring for Portugal in the 23rd minute. Sevilla striker Akor Adams equalized for Nigeria in the 37th minute, before Juventus midfielder Francisco Conceição restored Portugal’s lead in the 75th minute.

The friendly was held in Leiria, Portugal, before the team’s departure to the United States, where Roberto Martínez’s side will face the Democratic Republic of Congo on June 17 in Houston.

Nigeria, meanwhile, was missing two of its biggest stars — Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen — and failed to qualify for the World Cup after losing to the DR Congo in the playoff round.
