Just three minutes stood between Real Madrid and leaving the "Manuel Martínez Valero" with a painful draw, before Carlos Espí  the new summer arrival in Mourinho's ranks  restored the smile to the Merengue camp with the winning goal in the first minute of stoppage time, sealing a 3-2 victory that perfectly captured the gulf between a team fighting for survival and one refusing to concede ground in the title race.

A Royal Start, Calm on the Surface, Uneasy Underneath

Real Madrid opened the scoring in unexpected fashion: a defensive error from Elche goalkeeper Matías Dituro gifted the visitors an own goal in the 25th minute, before Kylian Mbappé doubled the lead in the 33rd with one of his trademark attacking touches. At that point, the match looked like another routine outing for a side sitting four points behind league leaders Barcelona, against an opponent who had entered the round in 19th place with a single point to their name.

Elche Refuses the Pre-Written Script

In the second half, Elche — under Martín Anselmi and their summer attacking duo Abiel Osorio and Fernando Niño  rediscovered their belief. Osorio, the Argentine forward seeking his first real chance in the starting lineup, scored in the 71st minute to give the home crowd genuine hope, before Niño, the striker recently returned to the top flight, completed the job with a deserved equalizer in the 83rd, a reward for his side's boldness.

For a few minutes, it looked as though the "Franjiverde" were about to snatch a point that would have ranked among the most valuable of their season, against a side whose sheer roster depth makes even a draw against them a notable achievement.

Espí... The Signature That Didn't Wait Long

But Mourinho, whose history holds little patience for draws, found his answer on the bench: Carlos Espí, the young talent signed from Levante after a season that ended with him being named LaLiga's best Under-23 player, found the right pocket of space inside the box and struck the ball that returned the win  and the temporary top spot, out of Barcelona's immediate reach  to Real Madrid, in the first minute of stoppage time.

A goal at such a moment isn't measured only in three points; it's measured in the early confidence it hands a player meant to be a genuine option, not merely a seasonal backup.

Analysis

At its core, the match was a precise reflection of both sides' current reality this season: a Real Madrid with the luxury of changing a game's course from the bench, and an Elche with the courage but  as is typical of relegation-threatened sides  the lack of composure in decisive moments. The win keeps Mourinho's pressure on Barcelona alive, while Elche are once again left facing their toughest question: how many points can a team fighting bravely afford to lose before that bravery becomes nothing more than a statistical consolation?
