Real Madrid handed a precious gift to their rivals Barcelona, the leaders of La Liga, after they stumbled at home against visiting Girona and had to settle for a 1–1 draw on Friday in matchday 31 of the Spanish top flight.

Uruguayan Federico Valverde put Real Madrid ahead in the 51st minute, but Frenchman Thomas Lemar equalised for Girona in the 62nd minute, meaning both teams left with a single point.

This draw lifted Real Madrid’s tally to 70 points in second place, six full points behind league leaders Barcelona, who were due to face Espanyol in the same matchday. Girona, meanwhile, remained on 38 points in 12th place.

Real Madrid had received a heavy blow days earlier by losing 1–2 at the same Bernabéu to Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter‑final clash, making their task even tougher ahead of the return leg.
