Ronaldo Comes Off the Bench to Lead Al-Nassr to a Crushing 4-0 Win Over Al-Riyadh in the Saudi Pro League

Riyadh – Matchday 2 of the Roshn Saudi League

Al-Nassr sent a clear message of strength at the start of their campaign in the new season of the Roshn Saudi Professional League, inflicting a heavy defeat on host Al-Riyadh with four unanswered goals on Friday evening at Prince Turki bin Abdulaziz Stadium  a match that exposed a wide technical and physical gap between the two sides from the very first minutes.

An Early Start and a Decisive Finish

"Al-Alami" did not wait long to break the deadlock, as defender Abdulelah Al-Amri opened the scoring early in the 18th minute with a precise header from a well-placed corner kick, putting Al-Nassr on the right track from the outset. Just before the halftime whistle, Brazilian winger Ângelo added the second goal in the 45+1st minute with a decisive left-footed strike, sending his side into the break two goals to the good and comfortable both mentally and technically.

In the second half, Al-Nassr continued to press without giving their hosts any chance of a comeback, as Portuguese forward João Félix added the third goal in the 58th minute with a powerful right-footed shot, exploiting a clear defensive gap in Al-Riyadh's back line.

The Legend Returns: Ronaldo Leaves His Mark

The standout moment of the match came from outside the starting lineup. Australian coach Ange Postecoglou opted to bring on Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo as a substitute in the 61st minute in place of starter Abdullah Al-Hamdan  a tactical decision that had raised questions before kickoff. Yet "The Don" once again proved he is a player for decisive moments, scoring the fourth goal in the 83rd minute with a beautiful diagonal left-footed finish, confirming his scoring instinct even coming off the bench.

The Two Lineups

Al-Nassr: Bento; Nawaf Boushal, Abdulelah Al-Amri, Ibrahim Martínez, Salem Al-Najdi; Ângelo, Abdullah Al-Khaibari, Kingsley Coman, João Félix, Sadio Mané, Abdullah Al-Hamdan.

Al-Riyadh: Milan Borjan; Al-Essa, Hussam Majrashi, Mohammed Al-Khaibari, Sulaiman Hazazi; Keïta, Fahad Al-Jayzani, Bernard Mensah; Teddy Okou, Leandro Antunes, Mohamed Trezeguet.

The match saw several substitutions from both sides in the second half, most notably Ronaldo's introduction for Al-Hamdan in the 61st minute, followed by the introduction of Ayman Yahya, Ali Al-Hassan, and Nader Al-Sharari in the 76th minute. Al-Riyadh's French coach Mauricio Dulac, meanwhile, made relatively early substitutions in an attempt to break his side's attacking stagnation.

Match Analysis

From the opening whistle, Al-Nassr imposed their trademark style under Postecoglou  built on high possession and early, aggressive pressing on the ball carrier  something the Australian coach had emphasized before the match, stressing that his team must maintain "the initiative with and without the ball." This philosophy was clearly reflected on the pitch, as Al-Riyadh struggled genuinely to play out from their defensive third, despite the presence of experienced names in their squad such as Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan and Egyptian winger Mohamed Trezeguet.

By contrast, Al-Riyadh's back line looked fragile against Al-Nassr's attacking intensity, as the visitors successfully converted their field dominance into goals scored by four different players  a positive indicator of the diversity of Al-Nassr's scoring sources this season, not reliant solely on Ronaldo's presence.

For his part, Dulac acknowledged the difficulty of the task, noting in his comments that preparing for such matches requires a mental readiness of around 80%, alongside the tactical dimension  an implicit admission of the psychological gap Al-Nassr had created from the match's early minutes.

Implications of the Result

This result follows an earlier 3-0 win for Al-Nassr over Al-Fateh, confirming the team's continued solid defensive and effective attacking performance at the start of the season, positioning them strongly to contend for the title from the very first rounds. Al-Riyadh, meanwhile, face an urgent need to fundamentally review their defensive setup ahead of the upcoming rounds, particularly given the clear gap exposed in this match against one of Asia's most prominent clubs.
