Al-Meschal Departs.. And The Green Searches For A New Dawn
By: Dr. Talal Othman, General Manager of GCC Sport
The resignation was no surprise to those who read the scene with open eyes. When the Saudi national team exits the 2026 World Cup without advancing beyond the group stage — on the soil of a tournament hosted by North America — the logic of sport leaves no room for silence, and responsibility cannot be scattered to the wind.
At dawn on Monday, Yasser Al-Meschal announced what Saudi fans had been waiting for: his departure from the presidency of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, after seven years at the helm — years that carried bright moments for Saudi football, yet the World Cup failure came to dim some of that shine.
Al-Meschal bore his full responsibility without evasion, apologized to the fans with a candor that deserves credit, and affirmed that the national ambition deserves a new phase with new hands. Honorable words, delivered at the right moment — but the question that cannot be deferred remains: what comes next?
The federation will not fall into a vacuum. The current board will continue managing affairs until a new board is elected, expected within weeks. Yet what is needed is not merely different faces behind the conference table, but a genuinely different vision at the core — a different methodology in building squads, selecting coaches, and discovering talent.
Saudi football possesses the financial resources that nations envy, and a generation of players that deserves a truly professional environment. What it lacks is not the riyal, but pure sporting vision — free from the calculations of appearances and occasions.
Al-Meschal left with the honor of acknowledgment. The file is now open for whoever comes next. And the Saudi fans, who rallied behind the Green with all their hearts, deserve more than a graceful apology. They deserve a result.
