Spain will now face the winner of Portugal vs Croatia on Monday in Dallas. It is a highly anticipated match given the strength of both teams and the possibility that it could be one of the highlights of the Round of 16.
Austria… A Historic Appearance That Could Not Stand Against the Spanish Giant
In their first appearance in the knockout stages in 44 years, Austria looked tense and incapable of matching Spain’s speed or the high press deployed by Luis de la Fuente’s side. They rarely threatened Unai Simón’s goal and remained stuck in a defensive posture throughout the match.
Spain played a one-sided game thanks to three key pillars:
  • An organized high press that strangled Austrian build-up play before it could begin.
  • Fluid attacking movements between Oyarzabal, Baena, and Cucurella.
  • Complete control of midfield through the triangle of Pedri–Baena–Merino.
First: The Spanish Press… A Suffocating System
De la Fuente relied on a high press starting from the front three, with tight marking on Austria’s central midfielders. Oyarzabal acted as the first defender, directing pressure toward Austria’s left side. Cucurella pushed high to close the first passing line, while Pedri and Baena set a “midfield trap” that forced Austria into inaccurate long balls.
Result: Austria were barely able to play out from the back, spending most of the match trapped in their own half.Oyarzabal… A Tactical Striker Before Being a Goal Scorer
He scored two goals, but more importantly:
  • He moved intelligently between the lines.
  • He dragged defenders away to open spaces for Pedri and Baena.
  • He played the role of a “false 9” in many moments.
Oyarzabal was the focal point upon which the entire Spanish attack was built.
