Liverpool’s Dutch manager, Arne Slot, believes that the emphatic 4–0 victory his team achieved over Turkish side Galatasaray on Wednesday, in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, serves as a warning message to their next opponent, defending champions Paris Saint‑Germain.
After losing the first leg 0–1 in Turkey, Liverpool roared back at Anfield with a dominant four‑goal performance to secure their place in the quarterfinals of Europe’s premier competition. There, they will face PSG, who humiliated another English side, Chelsea, with an aggregate score of 8–2 in the Round of 16.
The matchup between Liverpool and Luis Enrique’s team will be a repeat of last season’s Round of 16 clash, when PSG eliminated the Reds on penalties after Liverpool had won the first leg 1–0. PSG went on to win the Champions League for the first time in their history, crushing Inter Milan 5–0 in the final.
Liverpool were top of the Premier League when the two sides met last season, but they are enduring a more difficult second campaign under Slot.
The Reds currently sit fifth in the league and had to overturn the deficit against Galatasaray after the first‑leg loss in Istanbul.
However, doubts quickly faded at Anfield on Wednesday when Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring in the 25th minute.
In the second half, Frenchman Hugo Ekitike, Dutchman Ryan Gravenberch, and Egyptian star Mohamed Salah — who had missed a penalty late in the first half — all found the net. It was the perfect response after Liverpool were booed by their own fans following a disappointing 1–1 draw with struggling Tottenham on Sunday.
Speaking about facing the reigning European champions, Slot said: “Their level hasn’t dropped. There wasn’t much room for improvement to begin with… they’ve been incredible so far.”
He added: “But after a night like this, I don’t think they’ll be too excited to face us either.”
Liverpool won 1–0 at the Parc des Princes in last season’s first leg despite being outplayed, but the roles were reversed in the return leg when PSG won 1–0 at Anfield despite Liverpool’s superior performance.
Slot continued: “They completely outplayed us away from home. I think we played a great match here at Anfield, and in the end we lost on penalties.”
