Valencia boosted its chances of avoiding relegation to the second division with a valuable 1-0 away win over Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, in matchday 35 of the Spanish football league.

The only goal of the game at San Mamés, the Basque side’s home ground, was scored by Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq in the 72nd minute.

Valencia collected three precious points to move up to 42 points in 12th place, level on goal difference with Rayo Vallecano and Osasuna, who sit above them in the table.

It was also Valencia’s second win in their last five league matches, allowing them to move five points clear of the relegation zone with three rounds left in the season.

As for Bilbao, they suffered their third defeat in their last five matches and remained on 44 points in ninth place, level on goal difference with Real Sociedad and Getafe, who are also above them in the standings.
