Van Dijk: Liverpool Didn't Deserve Positive Result Against Wolves
Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool's captain, believes his team didn't deliver the performance needed to earn a positive outcome in their Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.
Liverpool suffered a shock 1-2 defeat to bottom-of-the-table hosts Wolves on Tuesday evening in the 30th round, freezing their tally at 48 points in fifth place—three behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, the final Champions League spot for next season.
Post-match, Van Dijk said: "I think the blame lies with us. We were slow, predictable in possession, poor in decision-making. True, we didn't give the opponent many chances, but if your performance is like that, this might be the result. That's the truth, and it's disappointing from tonight."
On the poor start, the Dutchman explained: "There's no single reason. Nowadays, football matches undergo intense analysis of what's happening on the pitch. As a team, we want to start matches in the best possible way, and we did that last game (vs West Ham United). Today, we had most possession, but made wrong decisions and couldn't capitalize on chances. Ultimately, we're hugely disappointed with today's loss."
Regarding Wolves' goals, Van Dijk revealed: "Conceding is always frustrating. We'd kept clean sheets in two games (before West Ham). Our defense was very solid. But it happened, and we must move past it quickly—we return here in two days for the FA Cup and want a good performance. We need to show a strong reaction."
Liverpool prepares to face Wolves again at the same venue on Friday in the FA Cup fifth round, hoping to appease frustrated fans and push for the historic trophy amid fading league title hopes this season.
On the loss complicating the top-five race, Van Dijk stated: "The whole season hasn't been easy. It was expected to be up-and-down for various reasons. The league is strong; teams play every three or four days—it's a real battle."
He concluded: "We need all players at their best and a deep squad for that. We need results—we got good ones in the past two weeks, but not today. It shows we still have work to do; that's clear, and we must focus on it.
