Joao Gomes and Rodrigo Gomes scored as the Premier League's bottom club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, stunned Aston Villa with a 2-0 derby win at Molineux and avoided an unwanted record.
Villa travelled across the West Midlands in need of a positive result after losing momentum in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification or even the title, but their poor form continued as Wolves battled to a deserved victory in wet conditions.
Joao Gomes put Rob Edwards' side ahead in the 61st minute, crashing a shot in off the underside of the crossbar after strong work from Jackson Tchatchoua and Adam Armstrong.
And after Yerson Mosquera's goalline block denied Villa a stoppage-time equaliser, Rodrigo Gomes killed the contest by finishing on the turn following a rapid counter-attack.
The result - only Wolves' second win of the season - took them to 13 points, meaning Rob Edwards' side exceeded Derby County's record for the fewest points in a Premier League campaign, 11 in 2007/08.
Villa stay third, but now could be overtaken if Manchester United beat Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday.
How the match unfolded
Villa had two excellent chances early on, but Mosquera recovered well to block Ollie Watkins' shot behind, before Pau Torres headed wide when left unmarked from the resulting corner.
Toti Gomes then sent an awkward volley wide for Wolves, who were arguably the better team for much of a scrappy first half. Villa had another decent opportunity when Douglas Luiz worked goalkeeper Jose Sa from Matty Cash's cross.
Wolves got a deserved opener just past the hour mark, as Armstrong touched Tchatchoua's excellent pass into the path of Joao Gomes, who fired in off the woodwork.
Sa beat Ian Maatsen's shot away as Villa desperately chased an equaliser, but the visitors' best chance to level saw Mosquera smuggle Amadou Onana's shot off the line.
And with the visitors throwing everyone forward, Wolves added a second eight minutes into stoppage time, with Rodrigo Gomes spinning to fire past 'keeper Emiliano Martinez after Mateus Mane had linked up with Joao Gomes on a swift break.
