Flamengo was crowned Brazilian football league champion on Wednesday after defeating Ceara 1-0 with a goal from winger Samuel Lino at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, just four days after winning the Copa Libertadores for the fourth time in its history against fellow Brazilian Palmeiras.

Flamengo raised its tally to 78 points, leading Palmeiras by five points with one round remaining.

This is the eighth title in the history of Brazil's most popular club, following wins in 1980, 1982, 1983, 1992, 2009, 2019, and 2020, tying Santos while trailing Palmeiras' 12 titles.

Only Pele's legendary Santos in 1962 and 1963, Flamengo in 2019, and Botafogo in 2024 have achieved the domestic and continental double in a single season.

Flamengo also became the first Brazilian club to win four Copa Libertadores titles, equivalent to Europe's Champions League.

Flamengo coach Filipe Luis expressed "immense pride" at the press conference: "In a few years, the players will realize what they've accomplished. They are immortal."

At the packed Maracana, Flamengo fans unveiled a giant banner reading "King of Cups" to celebrate the new title.

Lino (25 years old), who joined Flamengo this season from Spanish club Atletico Madrid for a record 31.6 million euros, scored the winning goal in the 38th minute from a through ball by Colombian Jorge Carrascal.

Lino said: "This shows my resilience. I fight all the time, and I struggle, not just in this match, but in my career and daily life."

He added: "Scoring the title-winning goal makes me happy."

Palmeiras' 3-0 win over Atletico Mineiro did not prevent Flamengo's crowning, while Palmeiras' Portuguese coach Abel Ferreira quickly congratulated the winners, saying: "A great team and a great coach."

Flamengo's season is not over, as they face Mexican champions Cruz Azul in the Intercontinental Cup on Wednesday.

The winner of that match will face Egypt's Pyramids FC, African champions, for a spot in the final against European champions Paris Saint-Germain on December 17 in Doha.
