Bayern Munich Fall Into Viking’s Trap… Comeback Hat-Trick Undone by Olise Red and Late Sucker Punch

UEFA Champions League – Matchday 2 | Viking 3-3 Bayern Munich

Norway was no routine stop for the Bavarian giants. Bayern Munich, accustomed to settling European nights with ruthless efficiency, ran into a Viking side that knew how to wait for its moment. Tuesday’s 3-3 draw in the second round of the Champions League’s single-table league phase tasted like defeat for the German champions  and like victory for the hosts.

An Early Shock: Viking Strike First

Just two minutes in, Australian Jani Stinsens made clear this would be no stroll, scoring before Vincent Kompany’s side had found its footing. On 38 minutes, Peter Christiansen doubled the lead, sending Bayern into the break two goals down — an unfamiliar sight for a club of their stature.

Second Half: Kane and Díaz Rewrite the Script

Bayern emerged a different team. Harry Kane started the fightback from the penalty spot on 54 minutes, then levelled six minutes later (60'), once again the man for the big occasion. Luis Díaz completed the turnaround on 71 minutes, and a classic Bayern comeback night seemed sealed.

The Turning Point: Olise Sent Off

Football, however, rarely respects a finished script. Two minutes after taking the lead, Michael Olise was shown a red card (73'), stripping Bayern of one of their most dangerous attackers and turning a side chasing a fourth into ten men protecting a one-goal edge.

The Killer Blow: Haugen Steals a Point

Viking exploited the numerical advantage intelligently, pressing until the final moments, and substitute Herman Haugen struck on 90 minutes to silence Bavarian hopes of a win that had been within reach.

Analysis

The match exposed two problems in Kompany’s Bayern: a sluggish start that let a less experienced opponent build a two-goal lead, and a lapse of discipline at the decisive moment, as Olise’s dismissal cost two points already in the bag. Recovering from 2-0 down speaks to the character of a big club — but big clubs are also judged on their ability to close games out, not merely rescue them.

Despite the disappointment, Bayern extended their unbeaten run across all competitions to 14 matches and moved to four points, while Viking claimed their first point of the campaign — one the Norwegian club will remember for a long time.
