Lando Norris, the McLaren driver and British title contender, snatched pole position by a tiny margin from his compatriot Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari. He achieved his first pole of the year on Saturday after setting a perfect lap in the final seconds of qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix, the 11th round of the Formula 1 World Championship.Norris (26 years old) recorded the best time of 1 minute and 17.207 seconds, beating Hamilton's attempt to secure his 10th pole position at the same circuit by just 0.012 seconds. Monaco's Charles Leclerc finished third in the other Ferrari.Italian Kimi Antonelli, who leads the overall standings for Mercedes, qualified fourth, 0.260 seconds behind, ahead of Australian Oscar Piastri (the second McLaren driver) and four-time world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull.A smiling Norris said: "I'm very happy to be back at the top. It was a tough session, and those guys (Ferrari) were very fast. It was difficult all weekend, but we were quick, and the updates we brought helped us. It's absolutely fantastic to get pole, especially at this circuit."Hamilton, aged 41, came close to becoming the oldest driver to take pole since American Mario Andretti at the 1982 Italian Grand Prix. For Norris, this was his second pole in Budapest and the 17th of his career.Hamilton said: "Congratulations to Lando. I think we did a great job all weekend and we were consistent in qualifying, but going out first wasn't the right decision. On top of that, the grip wasn't there for Charles and me at the end."He added: "We were the fastest, but it slipped away from us in the end."Leclerc said: "There was a big change in wind direction today, and I didn't handle it as I should have. Everything was a bit chaotic."The session took place in hot conditions, with track temperature reaching 52°C. Finland's Valtteri Bottas topped the times early on in his Cadillac, ahead of his main rivals from Williams and the upgraded "B-spec" Aston Martin cars.Ferrari sent both cars out on medium tyres. Hamilton quickly set the fastest time of 1:18.730 ahead of Leclerc, but Leclerc's lap was deleted for exceeding track limits.The rest of the drivers used soft tyres, allowing Norris to take the lead ahead of Verstappen, Antonelli, and Hamilton. Aston Martin had reason for optimism as Spaniard Fernando Alonso reached Q2 for the first time this year, finishing 16th.Eliminated in Q1 were both Cadillac cars, both Williams cars, Canada's Lance Stroll in the second Aston Martin, and Britain's Oliver Bearman from Haas.Thailand's Alex Albon (Williams) said: "That was really bad. Why does the car's balance change like this?"
