Belgian coach Vincent Kompany, the current Bayern Munich manager, is aiming to match the best start in Bundesliga history, set by Spanish coach Pep Guardiola during the 2015-2016 season.
The current generation of Bayern stars is gaining confidence after the Bavarian club began the 2025-2026 season perfectly, winning all nine league matches with a +29 goal difference—a historic achievement.
However, the absolute record for the longest winning streak to start a Bundesliga season remains with Guardiola, who led Bayern to ten consecutive wins at the start of the 2015-2016 season. Interestingly, Guardiola’s team also had a +29 goal difference after those ten matches, which opens the door for Kompany’s squad to set a new record if they win against Union Berlin this Saturday.
Comparing their overall records up to the ninth round this season, Kompany’s first 42 league matches as Bayern’s coach have exactly the same average points per game (2.52) as Guardiola’s 102 Bundesliga matches. Yet, reviewing Guardiola’s statistics with Manchester City after the same number of Bundesliga matches Kompany has coached, shows the Spanish coach slightly ahead.
After 43 Bundesliga games, Bayern under Kompany earned 109 points (34 wins, 7 draws, 2 losses), while Guardiola earned 111 points (35 wins, 6 draws, 2 losses) in his first 43 matches leading Bayern, resulting in an average of 2.58 points per game for Guardiola compared to 2.53 for Kompany.
Although breaking this record might not be the top priority compared to defending the Bundesliga title, it is nonetheless an achievement that Kompany and his team will surely pride themselves on.
After a win against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Kompany said: “We can’t stop; we have to continue. We have good momentum, but we can’t be too arrogant. We must stay calm, work hard, and get the job done in the next match.”
