- Defeat despite increased chances
- Doué & Dembélé score late for Paris
- Concern for Jamal Musiala
It wasn't meant to be: FC Bayern were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup on Saturday. In the end, a convincing performance was not enough to win, Paris Saint-Germain ultimately advanced to the semi-finals by losing 2-0 (0-0). Coach Vincent Kompany's Munich side were eliminated with their heads held high by the reigning UEFA Champions League winners. Desiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé scored late for PSG to win (78th/90th+6th).
The spectators in Atlanta saw a top European game right from the start. The Munich team started courageously, ran high and were safely in possession of the ball. Michael Olise had the first chance after six minutes with a left-footed shot. PSG, however, picked themselves up and repeatedly made dangerous attacks, such as via Khvicha Kvaratskhelia after 19 minutes.
Almost the Bayern lead! Harry Kane dribbled against two opponents in this scene in the centre and the ball then came to Michael Olise on the right wing. The Frenchman put the ball on his right and took off, but Gianluigi Donnarumma in the PSG goal just got his fingertips on the ball.
Good for the one who has Manuel Neuer between the posts! Kvaratskhelia broke through on the left wing and was suddenly free in front of the five-time world goalkeeper from an acute angle. Neuer initially saved the ball with a class reflex and prevented the Georgian from scoring in the follow-up.
That should have been the lead! First, Kane aimed a header just over the bar on the left wing after a beautiful individual performance by Kingsley Coman (38th), then Aleksandar Pavlović played a sharp cross in front of the goal. Jamal Musiala tried to get the tip of his foot on the ball, but even without contact it became extremely dangerous for PSG. Donnarumma made another outstanding save.
Too bad, again no Bayern lead. The players had already celebrated after an Olise free-kick on Dayot Upamecano, but the Frenchman's header was subsequently disallowed. The central defender was offside.
In the course of the first half, Josip Stanišić had to be substituted due to injury, and Jamal Musiala had to be substituted at half-time. The Germany international was injured in the opponent's penalty area in the last scene of the first half and had to be carried off the pitch. Sacha Boey and Serge Gnabry were substituted in for the two
World class from Manuel Neuer! After the FCB defence had moved up too far, Bradley Barcola ran free towards the German. Neuer stood still for a long time and fished the ball out of the far corner.
Lead for the Parisians. After Bayern lost the ball going forward, PSG countered via Doué, who scored from distance with his left into the bottom right corner to give the CL winners a surprising lead.
90+6 minutes: Dembélé decides the game
After a header by Kane was whistled for offside (87th) and Pacho (82nd/gross foul) and Lucas Hernández (90+2/assault) were sent off for Paris, Ousmane Dembélé scored the decisive goal after a counterattack. And once again FCB had reason to hope: After a controversial scene against Thomas Müller, the referee initially decided on a penalty kick for FC Bayern, but reversed this decision after viewing the television images.
