Manchester City 2-4 Paris Saint-Germain | UEFA Champions League – Matchday 2
PSG Make History at the Etihad as Haaland Fights Alone
By Dr. Talal Othman, General Manager — GCC Sport
Thirty-two minutes were all Paris Saint-Germain needed. On an electric European night at the Etihad, the two-time reigning champions beat Manchester City 4-2. It was PSG’s first-ever win at City’s ground, and they led 3-0 at the break.
A First Half Scripted by Luis Enrique
City arrived buoyed by their statement win at Anfield, but they met a side with absolute clarity of purpose. The hosts almost struck first when Safonov punched the ball onto his own crossbar, and PSG opened the scoring moments later. Désiré Doué’s superb strike came on 13 minutes, and Dembélé headed in the second just 99 seconds later. Vitinha then drilled a powerful shot in at the near post on 32 minutes, and the contest looked over before half-time.
Maresca’s Gamble and Haaland’s Revolt
Enzo Maresca made a triple change at the interval, and City were transformed. They took 21 shots after the switch and put PSG under heavy pressure. Haaland’s header on 53 minutes revived the hosts. With that goal and his second, the Norwegian became City’s record goalscorer in the competition, with 38 goals from 41 appearances.
Akliouche’s Dagger
Just as the Etihad began to believe, PSG answered. Akliouche scored the fourth on 62 minutes, nine minutes after Haaland’s goal, converting Dembélé’s assist. City kept coming and hit the woodwork twice in quick succession. On 75 minutes Haaland turned in a pass from Bouaddi, but Safonov denied him a hat-trick at close range. PSG also missed a late penalty that would have put the game beyond doubt.
Analysis
PSG won through the courage of their selection before they won on the scoreboard. Starting Doué, Dembélé and Akliouche up front was vindicated, as all three scored, while Vitinha held the midfield together. For City, the harsh lesson is that even a ferocious second-half revival cannot erase a first half that surrendered the initiative to a ruthless champion.
