Rogers opens the door and Palmer shuts it as Chelsea deepen United’s misery

Chelsea 2–0 Manchester United | Premier League – Matchweek 9

Some afternoons expose the gap between a side that knows how to win and one that has forgotten how. Manchester United were the better team for 45 minutes at Stamford Bridge and created the clearer chances, yet they left with nothing. Chelsea were some way short of their best. They needed five minutes of the second half and one flash of individual brilliance to change the whole afternoon.

That moment came on 50 minutes. Roméo Lavia won possession in midfield and Morgan Rogers took over, driving through the heart of United’s defence with barely a challenge. He slipped between Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez as if neither was there, then lifted a chip over the onrushing Senne Lammens with nerve and composure. This is what Chelsea paid £117m for in July: a player who can make something from nothing in a big game.

From there, United came apart. On 63 minutes Martínez fouled his man inside the area, collected a second yellow card and was sent off, and a penalty was given. Cole Palmer struck it low towards the bottom-right corner. Lammens got a fingertip to it but could not keep it out. The contest was effectively over: two goals in 14 minutes, a man down, and a visiting side with nothing left to offer.

The cruelty of the result belongs to United. The first half was theirs on clear-cut chances, and they squandered every one, a habit that clings to teams in decline. Their winless run now stretches to nine games, and the pressure on Michael Carrick tightens further. His team does not lack effort. It lacks conviction at both ends, wasteful in front of goal and brittle in front of its own.

Chelsea take a different lesson. Not every win requires a convincing performance. Sometimes it is enough to have players who see the gap before it opens. Rogers and Palmer made the difference, and Lavia lit the fuse.
