The UAE Football Association announced on Saturday the dismissal of national team head coach, Romanian Olăroiu Cosmin, from his position a year before the end of his contract, following recent results and failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
The UAE FA said in a statement that the decision comes “as part of preparations for the next phase, in line with its objectives and plans aimed at developing the national team’s progress and enhancing its readiness for upcoming competitions,” adding that the name of the new head coach will be announced later.
Olăroiu, 56, was appointed in April 2025 on a contract running until 2027, but failed to lead “Al Abyad” to the World Cup after losing to Iraq—who later qualified—in the Asian playoff (1–1 first leg, 1–2 second leg).
The UAE also finished third in the 2025 Arab Cup held in Qatar.
Emirati media reports revealed that Olăroiu could remain in the Gulf country, having received offers from Al Jazira and Al Nasr clubs.
Olăroiu is well familiar with UAE football, having coached Al Ain (2011–2013), Shabab Al Ahli (2013–2017), and Sharjah since 2021.
