Barcelona 3-0 Aston Villa: Yamal opens the door, Raphinha slams it shut

Lamine Yamal struck inside seven minutes and Raphinha’s second-half double with his left foot took Barcelona to 12 points from 12 in the Champions League.

Some nights are settled by a single blow. Others are won by slowly cutting off the air. Tuesday at the Spotify Camp Nou had both. Lamine Yamal scored after seven minutes, and Barcelona spent the rest of the evening shrinking Aston Villa’s space until there was none left. The 3-0 scoreline flattered nobody.

Unai Emery’s side arrived with six points from two wins and a defeat, hoping to make this long and awkward. The plan was out of date almost before it started. Yamal’s early goal turned Villa from patient counter-punchers into a side chasing the game, a poor fit for a team that would see only 35% of the ball. Without the ball came the fouls. Ian Maatsen was booked in the 11th minute, Emiliano Buendía in the 31st and Nicolas Jackson in first-half stoppage time. Three yellow cards in a half is what chasing a match rather than playing it looks like.

Barcelona were not flawless. Raphinha was booked for dissent just before the interval and looked more irritable than incisive. What he did after the break made that a footnote. In the 52nd minute Fermín López found him in the centre of the box, and his left-footed shot went low into the bottom right corner. Twelve minutes later João Cancelo supplied the cross and Raphinha, again with his left foot, finished from very close range into the bottom left. That third goal ended the contest.

Two minutes earlier Emery had made a triple substitution, with Buendía among those withdrawn. The goal came before the new men had settled. Barcelona answered with three changes of their own on 70 minutes, taking off Raphinha, Pedri and Fermín, and saw the game out comfortably.

The numbers back up what the eye saw: expected goals of 1.96 to 0.72, and five big chances to one. Barcelona even wasted two of those chances and still won by three. That is the gap between a side creating more than it needs and one barely creating enough.

Cancelo took player-of-the-match honours on the ratings for his work at both ends, while 74% of fans voted for Raphinha. Either way, the conclusion is the same. Barcelona have 12 points from four games and are building a serious case as contenders. Villa leave with a lesson they already knew: at the Camp Nou, small margins do not stay small for long.
